PubMatic Rolls Out Guardrail Architecture For Agentic Advertising

PubMatic has launched a governance framework for autonomous advertising on AgenticOS, which provides advertisers and agencies with control over how autonomous agents execute campaigns.

According to the company, the guardrail architecture is embedded at the point of execution, with account administrators able to set governance parameters using natural prompts, defining rules, thresholds and approval structures that apply across campaigns.

Following a five-step governance framework, the system allows brands to define boundaries for every agent on the system, and when an agent initiates a campaign, it inherits business rules to guide actions. The agents can only choose from pre-approved asset libraries to prevent them from executing unapproved parameters.

The guardrails also mean that if an agent encounters a decision which goes beyond its configured authority, it pauses and requests approval, which is documented through a one-time passcode. In addition, the framework logs every action taken by an agent, including under which parameters and whether a human was involved. If it deviates from parameters, this is flagged for review rather than continuing with automatic execution.

Prior to this launch, PubMatic also integrated its Fee Transparency Agent in March this year, followed by its Detailed Reasoning Agent in May, providing insight into supply chain spend and system decision-making.

According to the adtech company, Rise, a Quad agency, has joined as one of the first agency partners to pilot the framework.

Nishant Khatri, EVP Product Management at PubMatic, said that the rollout follows discovery work with buyers to gain insight into the type of governance guardrails required to scale agentic campaigns.

“What we've heard consistently is that buyers know what they want this technology to deliver, what controls they need to see, and where the system has to hold,” commented Khatri, adding, “This five-step architecture is the answer to what they told us. We believe that if we get this foundation right, there’s no ceiling on what this technology can do."

The launch comes against the backdrop of a wider shift in the industry towards autonomous operations within the ad industry and a growing focus on brand safety and auditing.

The number of participating members in the pilot and pilot results were not shared, nor was a timeframe for wider rollout.
