YouTube is Making it Easier for Small Creators to Earn, But is it Enough?

YouTube has revealed a new list of lowered eligibility requirements for smaller creators interested in joining the YouTube Partner Program.

YouTube is Making it Easier for Small Creators to Earn, But is it Enough?

The latest updates make it easier for smaller creators to start earning on the platform. Previously, creators needed 10,000 subscribers and either 4,000 watch hours in the last year or 10M Shorts views in the last 90 days to be applicable for the YouTube Partner Program (YPP).

The YPP was developed to give content creators on the platform greater access to YouTube resources and monetisation features, and access to specialised Creator Support teams.

Under the new update, smaller creators with 500 subscribers, three public uploads in the last 90 days, and either 3,000 watch hours in the last year or 3M Shorts views in the last 90 days can qualify for the monetisation programme.

Creators who apply to join the YPP can gain access to various monetisation tools such as Super Thanks, Super Chat, Super Stickers, channel memberships, and the ability to promote their merchandise through YouTube Shopping, which is where the earning comes in.

Initially implemented in the US, UK, Canada, Taiwan, and South Korea, the new eligibility criteria will expand to other YPP-eligible countries later on in the year.

YouTube’s shopping affiliate program

The Google-owned company is also expanding its shopping affiliate program offering to creators in the US who have more than 20,000 subscribers, and who are part of YPP.
