Pinterest users have found a workaround to ads and AI, according to Victoria Gertel Esposito, a Senior UX Researcher and Cognitive Psychologist.

What are they doing? Adding curse words to searches. Victoria says that this reportedly filters out AI-generated and sponsored results from their feeds.

Indeed, the visual discovery engine has been under fire from some users who argue that the platform is now overrun with so-called “AI slop.” Back in February, the platform shared updates to enable users to reduce the amount of AI-generated posts in their feeds, however, this hasn’t eradicated the issue, nor quelled ad overload, according to some users.

Pinterest is continuing to build out its commerce capabilities for advertisers, creators and affiliates, with new tools and partnerships, following moves from other major social platforms.

In marketing, ad personalisation and optimisation is increasingly the name of the game, while Pinterest itself has undergone a transformation into “an AI-powered visual-first shopping assistant.”

But as users push back and find workarounds to avoid disruption, it raises the question of whether platforms should, in fact, change their approach.

“Workarounds aren't a failure to follow directions. They're data. They show you exactly what users value, how they actually think, and shed light on where systems are out of sync with how people work,” says Victoria.
