This week, we’ve got insights from Phil Norris, who writes about the ChatGPT changes that resulted in a significant uptick in referral traffic to brands.

The shift happened on May 7th, Norris says, with OpenAI referral traffic to monitored brands jumping up 60–65% overnight — this saw homepage traffic increasing dramatically.

But Norris notes there’s a big affiliate question about attribution.

“What happens when an affiliate creates the content that influences the AI recommendation, but ChatGPT sends the customer directly to the brand?”

He advises that programmes should be prepared with a number of measures, from taking on affiliates who build out authoritative and “genuinely useful content,” to measuring assisted influence beyond traditional last-click attribution, something big players are already making moves on.

He adds that there should also be attention paid to which publishers and creators are appearing in AI answers related to your brand/category.

Further, Norris highlights reviewing how codes, first-party tracking and alternative attribution can “protect publisher value,” and says that AI visibility should be treated as part of the affiliate strategy, not just SEO.

“...the journey between publisher recommendation and tracked sale is changing AGAIN. And programmes that wait until the reporting proves it may already be behind,” writes Norris.

Coupled with the recent Reddit news, this is a reminder of just how quickly and dramatically the AI landscape is changing and how important it is to have your finger on the pulse.

Tomorrow we’re bringing together people in the AI and partnerships community to connect and chat about all the latest. We explain more below 👇
