What YouTube’s Fight With Netflix Actually Means for the Creator Economy

For years, YouTube has effectively served as the creator economy’s talent pipeline. Creators build audiences there, prove they can generate massive viewership, and eventually attract increasingly lucrative opportunities from streaming services, brands and other media companies, like Netflix. It's a canon event we have seen many times.

Now, YouTube appears to be fighting back.

According to Bloomberg, YouTube is offering some of its biggest creators millions of dollars to keep their content exclusive to the platform, which comes at a time when Netflix is increasingly pushing creator-led programming.

It's a sign of the times: YouTube isn’t simply competing with Netflix for viewers anymore. It is competing for creator loyalty, production rights and exclusive access to the talent that built the modern digital video ecosystem.
