The Influencer Industry Reacts to Australia’s Social Media Ban

Yesterday, Australia’s Senate passed a bill that will ban children under 16 from using social media.

The ban, which will not come into effect for at least 12 months, could see tech companies fined up to A$50m (£25.7m; $32.5m) if they do not comply.

The legislation does not specify what platforms will be banned, but Communications Minister, Michelle Rowland, said it will include Snapchat, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram and X. Gaming and messaging platforms are exempt, and sites that can be accessed without an account, such as YouTube, are unlikely to be banned.
