Gen Z Founders: Carolyn McMurray on Building a Copywriting Community of 2,500 Gen Zs

In my conversations with them, I’ve found that most Gen Zs struggle with not being taken seriously in professional settings. With that in mind, Word Tonic Copywriting Community has taken a different approach: embracing the Gen Z vibes.

Carolyn McMurray did what many famous Founders did before her: drop out of university to pursue her passions. While many stuffy boardrooms might be shaking their heads at her LinkedIn, she’s managed to grow a community of 2,500+ Gen Z Copywriters, offering them courses, seminars, events and even job opportunities.

McMurray is the perfect example of a Gen Z Founder taking their own initiative instead of trying to fit in with LinkedIn's corporate culture. Back in 2022, she was one of the first accounts I followed that didn’t feel like a corporate wall I would never understand.

I had a great time chatting with her about her journey to building a community, her way.

Sofia Aira: Firstly, how old were you when you first founded Word Tonic? I feel like you were really young.

Carolyn McMurray: I was 22. I started copywriting when I was 17, but the Word Tonic stuff started when I was 22.
