Last week, Google rolled out a significant update to Gemini (FKA Bard) that allows more links to be listed in its responses.
In early May, the AI chatbot largely stopped linking to outside sources. Since then, it appears to have gradually increased the number of links it shows, and now we have confirmation from Google that Gemini will link to more related content in order to combat hallucinations.
While this update appears to only be for ‘fact-seeking prompts’, it drove me over to Gemini to see how it currently links to affiliates. The changing face of SEO, particularly in AI chat, and how that will affect affiliates, has been a topic of curiosity (and concern) for quite some time in the industry.
As ever with Google search, the results were mysterious and principally inexplicable.
Apparently, it doesn’t link to affiliates
First of all, Gemini states that it “does not link to content affiliates.” It says, “As an AI language model, I am unable to engage in affiliate marketing or promote specific products or services.”
