Instagram is working on ‘social channels’, a new feature where creators can create a channel, allowing paying subscribers to join, follow, and send messages within it.
The feature will be similar to broadcast channels, labelled by Instagram as “a public, one-to-many messaging tool for creators to directly engage with their followers at scale.” It aims to be yet another new way for “creators to deepen connections with their followers.”
With broadcast channels, creators can help followers stay in the know with the latest updates and behind-the-scenes moments using a wide range of multimedia features, including text, photos, video, voice notes, and polls. Users can also react to content and participate in polls.
However, the new social channels feature will allow Instagram creators to better connect and build community with their paying subscribers. Creators will be able to have multiple ongoing social channels within a 30-day period, with each social channel being limited to 250 participants maximum, including the creator.
