The Creators Guild of America has launched CGA Rider, a legally binding document designed to protect the rights of content creators.

Riders have previously served as supplemental agreements added to contracts, enabling parties to adjust or clarify specific terms. In the same way, the CGA Rider is intended to be attached to agreements between creators and brands or agencies, addressing key issues like timely payment, content ownership, revisions, and approvals for content reuse or repurposing.

Launch partners Linktree, Whalar Group, Beacons AI, Influencer, Lumanu, Collab, Creator.co, The Influencer Marketing Factory, and The Creator Society joined the new document, which aims to set the industry standard for content creation.

Daniel Abas, Founder of the CGA, wrote on LinkedIn:

“The CGA Rider is not another template agreement or suggested set of best practices, but a legally binding document that has been officially adopted and recognised by participating brands. To this point, creators - our next generation of great entrepreneurs - have been at a crippling disadvantage. That changes starting today."

Inside the CGA Rider

CGA Rider offers a lot of protection for creators. Here are a few of the propositions outlined in the document:

  • Creators will have full rights to the work they create.
  • Proper credit must be given if your content is used publicly.
  • Your name, image or content cannot be used for AI training or anything else AI-related without your full permission.
  • A limit on the number of revisions.
  • Access to the analytics of campaigns that you produce, no matter who they are for.
  • A new maximum payment window of 90 days or less.

“Most Creators are independent operators, working with tight budgets and demanding timelines,” said Abas. “Many are without legal or talent representation, especially early in their careers, and commonly feel pressure to sign any agreement put in front of them, lest they lose a rare opportunity. As a result, Creators are often at a crippling disadvantage when it comes to negotiating the terms of their work, as outlets like Forbes have noted.

“We created the CGA Rider to start to level the playing field. In a perfect world, every Creator would have access to skilled representation. Until that day arrives, CGA members are encouraged to make full use of the Rider.”

The move is a huge step for creators and brands alike.
