In a recent interview, Sam Altman floated the idea of using affiliate links for GPT-referred product sales. If OpenAI moves forward with this, we could feasibly see AI models acting as affiliate publishers. But what does that mean for brands?

An AI-driven affiliate model could reshape product discovery, with recommendations happening in real-time through conversation rather than static content.

For advertisers and agencies, this is something to keep an eye on. If we want to talk about full-funnel affiliate marketing, LLMs could achieve exactly that, guiding users from discovery to conversion in a streamlined, hyper-personalised way.

However, this could also be extremely damaging to the publisher ecosystem overall.

If AI-driven referrals take off, will traditional affiliates struggle to compete? These are the questions the industry will need to consider as AI’s role in performance marketing evolves.
