Is there a loophole letting browser extensions bypass stand-down rules via sub-affiliate networks? John Coulson raised an interesting point recently.
Some extension publishers are reportedly using sub-networks to sidestep rules like soft cookies and enforced stand-downs – mechanisms designed to prevent cannibalisation of affiliate revenue.
Coulson outlined three potential fixes: ban extensions via sub-networks, force sub-networks to apply soft cookies/stand-downs, or enforce full transparency at the sub-affiliate level.
Reactions have been largely in agreement with Coulson. Some commentators think removing extensions from sub-networks entirely seems fair. Others are keen to hear how the networks themselves plan to respond. And one notes that it’s also relevant for influencer sub-networks.
Kevin Edwards from the APMA has responded, stating than an audit is in the works. It's an area we will be investigating too.
