Happy Tuesday!

Rakuten Advertising's Dealmaker event has been the highlight of our week. You can find main takeaways from the show below. There are also some in-depth interviews on the way.

One was with Dr. Nadia Morozova, who astutely monitors the psychology of customers interacting with influencer and affiliate marketing.

This got me thinking about any links between psychoanalysis and marketing. Apparently, Freud's nephew, Edward Bernays, is credited with practically inventing modern PR and advertising. He applied many of his uncle's theories to make his marketing campaigns more effective.

The spirit of Freud lives on in marketing. Just be careful to avoid any slips in your mothering โ€“ I mean messaging.

Anyway, on with the news!

Should you gamify your affiliate programme?

Affiliate managers are always on the lookout for novel ways to attract more high-performing affiliates and leverage those already on the programme.

Victor Giurgiu, Co-founder of Affistash, recommends a 'gamification' strategy.

This would include milestone badges, streak bonuses, collaborative challenges, and seasonal 'boss' levels around Q4 time.

Perhaps a 'Beat the Algorithm' challenge to encourage affiliates to diversify traffic sources.

Affiliate managers would have to work closely with brands to make sure different commission rates could be offered for these various challenges. There's also the risk here of micro-managing affiliates, rather than allowing them to follow their own unique impulses to drive success.

But if done in the right way, this could be a charming and inspiring way to run an affiliate programme.

It's hard to say if this would be overly complicated or genuinely engaging. But it is possibly worth a test.
