At PI LIVE Europe, Julia Linehan, Founder and CEO of The Digital Voice, was joined by Cat Agostinho, Co-Founder of Imagen Insights, for an open discussion on wellness in the workplace and toxic workplace cultures. The session took a look at how these issues impact individuals and teams, as well as ways to address and heal them.

Agostinho began by defining a toxic workplace, drawing on her own experiences. “It can show up in many ways, from bad leadership to bullying, cliques, and even fear-based behaviour,” she explained. She shared how, in her case, bullying and aggression in the workplace had a profound impact on her mental and physical health.
Over time, this environment led to self-doubt, sleep disruption, and strained relationships. “You start questioning yourself: Am I the right person for this job? Should I even be here?” Agostinho recalled.
When asked whether people should leave toxic environments, Agostinho acknowledged that it’s easier said than done. “It’s hard to be brave when you’re in that situation,” she said, explaining that she struggled to admit the toxicity she was facing. Despite this, she urged listeners to recognise the signs early and to find the courage to stand up for themselves. “It’s important to rely on your network,” she added. “There will always be someone who will want to help you, someone who’s willing to listen.”
Agostinho also highlighted the importance of spotting red flags before committing to a new workplace. “If the person who hired you leaves before you even start, that’s a red flag,” she advised. She recommended doing due diligence, such as asking people in your network about the company culture. “Lack of communication or poor leadership should raise alarm bells,” she said.
Lastly, the conversation turned to how people can help others experiencing a toxic workplace. Cat stressed that even if you can't fix someone else’s experience, being there to listen and checking in regularly can make a significant difference. “If you’re going through this, I urge you to find an ally, someone who can offer support, whether inside or outside the company,” she concluded.
