A report analysing app downloads across the globe presented that the number of downloads of TikTok has overtaken Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook Messenger, all of which are Facebook-owned, in downloads, even in the US. Since TikTok’s parent company ByteDance launched the international version of the short-video platform in 2017, its popularity has grown immensely.
There has been some privacy-related controversy surrounding the increase in TikTok usage, especially in the US, especially in the US. Former President, Donald Trump, previously called on the company to sell off its US operations or be banned. Joe Biden, Trump’s successor, has since withdrawn this order.
The report solidifies that, despite the said controversy, TikTok is the go-to social media app at present. Following the success and growth of the platform, we have seen Instagram introduce Reels as its short-form video competitor and YouTube with Shorts.
Although TikTok is no longer the only platform with a short-form video offering, its’ popularity remains. So, what will the results of next years’ survey show?
