Happy Tuesday!

This is our final newsletter of the year.

What a year it has been. We've seen dramatic Google updates that have changed the landscape of the industry; cashback tracking was classified as essential by the ICO; fintech affiliates have soared into power; Reddit and TikTok Shop have become the potential new hotspots for affiliate marketing, that is if TikTok doesn't get banned first...

It's been far from boring.

We thank you for being with us every step of the way. Our readers are why we continue to do what we do and we can't wait to get back on it in the new year, reporting and delivering you all of the essential stories.

This week, we have some lessons around Media Mix Modelling and avoiding toxicity and burnout in the workplace.

Let’s dive in!

In today's newsletter:

  • Pick of the day: How Media Mix Modelling can lowball the affiliate channel, and what you can do about it.
  • Trending: Lessons from the Voicebox.
  • Top Tip of the Week: Checking for Google News penalties.

Tip of the Week

Stay at the top of your game

If you’re a publisher or monitoring your partners' Google News visibility, here’s a quick method to check if a commerce section has been impacted by a Google penalty, specifically a site reputation abuse penalty.

  1. Search for the Publisher’s Source Link: Head to news.google.com and search for the publisher’s name. Look for the URL that includes .com/publications/—this indicates you’re in the right place.
  2. Check the Commerce Tab: Once you’re on the publisher’s profile, look for the commerce section among the tabs. If it’s missing, this could indicate that the publisher has been penalised.
  3. Spotting Recovery: If the commerce section has disappeared but then starts showing up again with fresh stories, it’s a sign the penalty may have been lifted, and the section has recovered.

While not all publishers display their commerce content this way, this method offers an easy way to check for penalties or recovery, whether you're reviewing your own site or keeping an eye on partners.

Shout out to Gary Kirwan for the tip.
